Here are my views on why Google Data Search is going to to be important for the geospatial community.
Five years ago, I had discussions with one of the key Google executives on data availability and accessibility, which was a big problem during that time. The context was in answer to a question on limited success of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) and how can we make geospatial data more accessible to the scientific community.
As we fast forward, we see that data culture is becoming a norm, and relevance for spatial data is growing. And Google Data Search seems to be a true outcome of this idea.

To the statement I made in the heading, yes I believe that Google Data Search is a new facet. This can have a huge impact on how we search and access geospatial data as well along with larger scientific data sets. This will one-way help in bridging the gap of geospatial data accessibility and availability.
